I have a crack on my cam sensor?

I brought my 2006 harley davidson street glide to the dealership because it was not starting. The mechanic said that i had a leak in my fuel line and a crack on the cam sensor. I believe it was the internal part because he sad he would have to remove the engine to fix it. How could this have happened? I have asked around and no one has ever heard of that happening?

As Andy said, how does he know it's cracked if he has to pull the engine to get to it? I've had the plastic outer casing on ignition coils crack and the cam sensor (technically it is a Hall Effect sensor) is basically just a tiny ignition coil, so I guess it could happen. More than likely what happened is that the insulating varnish on the wire winding inside of the sensor broke down, letting it short out. This prevents the sensor from producing an electric pulse signal, which is what the ignition unit used to tell it when to fire the spark plug.
