what is wrong with this motorcycle?

i am working on a 1982 ironhead harley davidson 1000 sportster....i thought the clutch was bad, i removed the clutch and all of the clutch plates, they all looked good... but i got to messing with the gear that the clutch plates go around and when i put the bike in gear that gear will only go back and fourth so far...(because its in gear) but when i rolled the bike back and fourth a little that gear will go back to spinning freely.... i dont know why??.. sometimes when i go to start the bike its like the starter is in a bind with the flywheel..i can rock it back and fourth and it will start... what would cause this and how hard would it be to fix... tell me all the possibilities..could it be just a bad berring or maybe the shifter fork is bent or does it sound like the tranny is shot.....please help me im wanting to buy this bike but i dont want to get in over my head

as for the binding starter issue, on the back of the primary cover (big chrome thing on the clutch side) you will notice the holes for the locating dowels (little pins coming off of the engine case, at least I hope they are there) are larger then the actuall pins themselves you might want to try and loosing the bolts all the way around AND the nut on the bottom AND the foot peg...and engage the starter the cover might just be a LITTLE out of alignment....also inside the transmission there is a shaft that seems loose when the cover is off at the other end is a ball if the ball is worn or the springs on either side are broken then the transmission will not go into gear fully unless the engine is running making it jump back into limbo or neutral. Long story short you need to do some studing its an iron head and will require a great deal of TLC to make sure you dont break anything you cant replace like the left engine case....ALSO make sure you have the clutch adjusted correctly I would go into it but thats another long winded story.
