Big Bore Kit on a 1998 Harley Ultra Classic Evo Engine?
Has anyone ever had one installed and what are the long term effects of having it done to this older engine? I get great gas mileage but would not mind sacrificing some for more POWER! Thanks
If you put in a stroker kit ,it has been known to shorten the life of a cylinder bore because the connecting rods approach the cylinder wall at a greater angle.
It's not such a great reduction in the life of the bore to keep one from doing a stroker. For example ,say a stock bore lasts 50k a stroker will still go 35-40k before it needs a hon and rings.
If you are talking just larger pistons on a stock crank, the life span of the motor is pretty much the same.
BTW, Harley cranks are pretty damn good ,I've known of many to go well over 500k before bearings are needed.
As far as mileage ,if one figures around 45 mpg for stock, figure 40 mpg for bigger pistons and 35mpg or so for a stroker with big pistons.
**** I wanted to add some ( opinion ) here as well.
Consider staying at around stock displacement, doing a 30 over bore, get high compresion pistons, an E.V.13 cam, a Crane Hi 4 ignition ,have your heads done and get a Mikuni carb.
The bike will fly, you will never even have to pull the bottom end out of the frame and the motor will last as long as a stocker.
I'm running a 121" and I get 35 -38mpg.
