Xlch Harley

Harley ... in XLCH, CH is synonymous with "hot competition" what does the XL stand for?
If you do not know what a XLCH, please do not bother trying to answer. Thank you all. someone cool, you know FLH? XLCH XLH and are all over cable diagrams in my book Clymer. No xlhc anywhere. throw some Google searches and xlhc, but I have not found ref. materials to support that. .. But thanks. just got back from the garage to check it out.
I have worked with / for / (and sometimes despite,, hehe) Race HD OB Department for several years. He took charge of the Department of Syverston old man in '57. 1957 was also the debut of OHV Sportster. I am not a historian or a HD even have a particular interest in them,, But I think Dick O'Brien, Resweber, Bernardo, and the guys who were there at the time know at least a little. Here is what I said ... (If I'm wrong,,, Laff I with ya,,,, Resweber is a good bullshit like Texas never generated. I wonder if I have it backwards) Anyway ...... X: Only Random letter pulled outa nowhere. Almost literally. Old USAF and NACA (Natnl Aeronautics Commission --- Today NASA) experimental aircraft were designated "X" Craft. X-planes are always cutting edge, new age, the next-generation technology because that X was a letter very prestigious designation the mid-50 was,,, and sorta in the forefront of the news and such. X-15 was the hottie at the time, mid 50's ---- foreground to reach the edge of space for "X" seemed an appropriate letter to designate the new Sportster OHV. L: Back in the days before Sportster OHV "L" was the designation of HD versions of several models with high compression engine upgrade. (This is confusing as hell, because it seems DOUBLE XLCH DESIGNATED as Hi CR) Anything "L" was above 57 in a kind of release or the feature code. ALL that was a standard model,,,, and most of all bikes in general ,,,,, Had relatively low compression ratio. When '57 came Sportster OHV,,, The "L" was adopted as part of name Based on the model. So the result was "XL" being standard. It means that each new setting Sportster engine had a modern, "Hi-compression" overhead valve engine serial STYLE, base-model computers Some people may remember back in the 60's and 70's, when cars and trucks actually They had plates that read "disc brakes" and "fuel injection" and such. XL "L" is sorta the same kind of mentality marketing. Mfgr advertising to technological advances by including mention at every opportunity. "Solid State" is another example --- which was incorporated as part Model Name TV, radios, stereos, etc more "L's">>> HAD <<<<" L "- Specifications engine - it was a choice of high CR / update. > XL>> SE <<<<a "technology of L-Type" of motorcycles. I do not know if I am explaining that in some sense. But L went from a code from a real model name. So some HD HAD, to what this new bike is. C: Here is the confusion,,,, and what looks like a double dip of the Designation of compression. First let me say that "C" means different trash,,, according to what was is in question, and what specific model. In the age of around late K and early XL,,, C called "competition." NO what is "high compression" C generally had in fact a greater understanding of "normal engines. They also had a higher compression Designated the L-Hi compression engines. So C came to be "misunderstood" to be "Hello compression" adjustment Rest C / package was overshadowed for extra-high compression. So for Lotts The people who were the predominant distinction configuration C. Y "C" became synonymous with high compression, very few people. XLC_ What did seem strange in a way. _OHV 55 "> Hi RC> Hello CR_ is how it can be mistranslated. Or, at least for anyone who took C in the sense of extra high CR Sorry to jump to another example of the car here, it is easier to understand / / / and more widely understood by most people. But,,,, take one of the first Ford Mustang, for example. I had a bunch of other options and equipment. Using only the V-8 versions,,,, you can see several stages. A Mustang was an X-Hawk,,, Falcon was an economy car 6cyl low perf. Platform Console on a new model> Mustang. Then,,, Mustang options added power levels. * Low compression 2bbl V8 passenger car engine base * A mid-compression 4bbl V8 engine * Optional PassengerCar High CR 4bbl V8 Mustang Hi-Perf Engine * After Several SPECIAL PERFORMANCE Engines Competition ",,, Cobra, GT-350, etc, whatever the different engines / Trans / rear axle, etc. were to a large extent part of the packages and only on some models. NO 6 Cyl GT350, not Hipo 289 in the base car. Back to Sporsters, The C was a adjustment package, which includes improvements to the engine specs plain XL. C meant official competition, but often considered in the sense of high compression H: "Hot" is another nickname that has endured over the years, and has sorta is believed that the "official designation." You can even find reffernce occasionally to as "red" theirself Milwaukee (But especially in later years) I can not swear,,, but I do not H-to-red was a Once actually an official designation, at least not initially. To set the "H" is necessary to know the model and the age of the bike in question. H: one of high performance or heavy duty. The XL "A" stands for "High Performance, Big Twin can mean, sometimes even both. ............................ .......... Therefore, as I said in the beginning, that could easily be wrong - no expert here,,,, but as explained to me "XL" is a MAKE NEW MODEL NAME, not arbirarily selected based on marketing considerations to match the new OHC Sportster as something cutting edge, modern, and traditionally potent compounds using one sort of marketing strategy on "X" to the modern, high technology, advanced design of the new OHV Sportster --- with the "X" being taken Aviation Research Program Terminology, combined with the "L" designation was high definition in the use of Hi-compression OPTIONAL available in several other models / versions. Harley fans knew what the option-L. That's how a lot of familiarity of the product> Marketing as nothing. However, the point where the option Use OLD / version of code as part of the NEW appropriate model name is also intended to distinguish the new XL '57 like TOTALLY NEW CLASS / engine type, and therefore special and powerful course sorta. Detroit did / does the same. Z-28 engine was a Chevy OPTION end code of the 60 it was LT-1. Over time, they adopted the venerable real option codes and full names of the models. Similarly added It's Milwaukee Dear "L" code first Sportster OHV I do not know much about XL, The X_ I only ever been officially / professionals are responsible for all those of I. This is X, but only sorta "relatives" Sportster. I was still in when XR Yamaha intro'd, Were they really the "Sportster Real ". Destroked XLR, actually. Never had to fool with XLR or the first XR, fortunately all just so worth it. How to verify? OB and Bernardo are dead now. I doubt Willie Werner worth trying to contact, but you never know. OB was the head of Bill from the beginning Werner w / Dept 517, obviously, until Bill took O'Brien the reins after he retired. But if Bill Werner was a true "mentor" @ HD I would say it was Ralph Berndt. So in that sense, I spose Werner is connected to "1957 Intro XL",,, and I'm sure you've heard all the "Back in the Day" story several times. Resweber yet is alive, last I heard,,, and in the back in Texas. No. No idea how to contact him, or what he does is? He would know, or at least ya'd fight to get a good story "is as follows:) ............................ FLH,,, have even less interest Big Twins in Sportster But I will give a shot. Anyone is welcome to correct me,,, please, feel free to take anyone else's explanation of mine. Well,,, H was simply following alphabetical progression after EE was first OHV Big Twin But it is only the E bit,,, 61 "E. These were first Knuckleheads. (Yes, the first HD 1000 cc OHV engine was not a Sportstster, but a Big Twin .... I guess everyone already knows, but some people have never thought of it that way) After World War 2, HD Panheads made to replace knuckles, and called the new models, "F" 's, since then the "F" name has stuck,,,, and mean "Big Twin" round head was ahead FL ,,,,, go back to the same old "L" = high compression level is high compression FL Big Twin FLH ... also goes back to the same old "H" = Hi-Perf. But since it is a Big Twin,,,, which can mean "Heavy Duty", or it may mean both. FLH is the instance where it means "two" more power and heavy duty. That's the Old Original regaurding Electra Glide anyway. Once again I will declare my ignorance. I do not know what a "modern" / late model FLH would be, is exactly what we know so little, I do not know a modern FLH, or whether this model it even made my apologies if this has been a waste of time
